Within this project, his research team collaborates in the WP1 (Coordination and management), WP4 (Identification of biomarkers of tumour/clonal B cells; Task 4.2), WP5 (Dissection of signalling pathways in tumour/clonal cells and their interaction with the tumour; Task 5.2), and WP6 (Data analysis, dissemination, and exploitation of results). In all these tasks, his research group plays a major role in clarifying the transcriptome programs, signalling pathways, and pathogenic mechanisms associated with monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis, the preleukemic stage of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia.

Professor Xose Bustelo received his PhD in Biology from the University of Santiago de Compostela in 1990. After that he moved to United States where he spent 6 years as postdoctoral/ Research Scientist in the Bristol Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute (Princeton, New Jersey, EE.UU.), and four years at the State University of New York (Stony Brook, New York, EE.UU.), as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology.

After his return to Spain, he has worked as a Scientist (2000-2024), Research Scientist (2004-2005) and Research Professor of the High Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) (2005-now)

His research is focused on the functional characterization of signal transduction molecules with oncogenic potential and, particularly, on the functional analysis of oncoproteins specialized in connecting the stimulation of membrane receptors with signalling routes that lead to both cytoskeletal change and mitogenic processes.

His work has been recognized by several awards, both national and international ones, such as Catacosinos Young Investigator Award for Cancer Research (1996), el Baldwin Award for Breast Cancer Research (1997), el Sinsheimer Award for Cancer Research (1997), and more recently National Oncology Prize by the Echevarne Foundation (2003), la Medalla de Oro (Gold Medal) de la Irmandade de Fillos e Amigos de Padrón (2006), Mutua Madrileña Foundation Prize (2007), Pfizer Research Award (2007) and «Severo Ochoa» Award of Biomedical Reserach (Ferrer Fundation, 2007).

In 2007 his group was recognised as a Research Excellence Group of Castile and León
